Flawed citizenship laws in Nepal

According to the above article, flawed citizenship laws in Nepal have led to de facto statelessness for millions of people in that country. Badly drafted nationality laws are another frequent cause of statelessness.

According to the Asia Foundation, both mother AND father must be Nepalese citizens for a child to gain citizenship. Unfortunately, many such citizenship laws exist, excluding children born to couples where one parent is foreign, or where the father is unknown or does not recognize the child. As a result, already marginalized and vulnerable children are denied citizenship.
